Work With Me

Getting started is easy. We have a conversation.

01

Consult

In a free phone consultation, we chat and determine if we’re right for each other.

Whether or not we decide to work together, I aim to make this a valuable conversation for you. If I think you need something different from what I offer, I’ll make suggestions.

02

Assess

If we’re a match, we’ll meet for an Initial Assessment. It’s best if this happens in person, but can be done virtually.

This is when I learn more about you — your health history, current issue/s and how your body moves — as well as your goals, preferences and lifestyle. We devise a plan based on what we learn together.

03

Empower

We keep assessing what works best for you as we work together.

My goal is not only to get you feeling better and moving more easily, but to empower you with self-sufficiency. While working with me, you acquire tools for maintaining your highest level of mobility and lowest level of discomfort.

We can work together in a variety of ways.

Since each client brings their own needs and goals, there is no single formula, and you have options.

Movement analysis and instruction

Working one-on-one, I collaborate with you to understand what’s interfering with your body’s ability to do what you want. Together, we discover how to restore and build what your body needs most.

You may need to learn to some new movements, or we may need to change some aspects of how you currently move — or both.

How we get there is determined by your body’s particular needs and your personal goals – not anyone else’s idea of what you should accomplish.

Manual therapy as needed

You may also benefit from targeted manual therapy. I use massage and other hands-on techniques to address chronically tight areas, and to “wake up” areas that have been under-performing.

Sometimes long-held patterns of movement need outside assistance from another pair of hands, to facilitate re-education of your neuromuscular system.

Minimal equipment requirements

The equipment we use (if any) is small and portable – things like stretch bands, foam rollers, balls, yoga blocks, exercise/yoga mats and sometimes weights. Anything you don’t have, I’ll provide at first. The bottom line is, equipment will not be a barrier.

Flexible meeting options

I make home visits in the Durham-Chapel Hill area and also meet virtually!

Or we can meet in a south Durham studio by appointment. I try to meet you wherever is easiest.

After the initial assessment, subsequent visits range from 30 to 60 minutes and can be in-person, virtual, or a combination as needed.

All the details — where we meet, how often and for how long — are tailored to your needs.

Whether we meet once a week or once a year, you will gain knowledge that is yours to keep.

Most important, I’ll teach you what’s happening, so you’ll learn about your body and how to take care of it.

Read how it’s worked for others.

To me, Susan fills the gap between physical therapy and a personal trainer. She notices the little things and tweaks how I do an exercise so I am doing it correctly, often explaining why and what's going on in my body. This alone is really valuable to me. She also didn’t overwhelm me with more than I can handle. My back and core are stronger, and now I have a repertoire of exercises that I can take with me anywhere.

Genuinely personal service

Coaching, guidance and education

We keep our compass pointed toward your goals.

I help you stay on the path AND teach you how to maintain your gains outside our sessions, in a way that works best with your lifestyle.

A comprehensive approach

I consider your whole body, not just the part having the most trouble. The place that hurts is not necessarily the cause of the problem.

All bodies are highly interconnected organisms, from head to toe – literally!

Collaboration with your other providers

If you’ve been working with other health practitioners, we can collaborate to enhance your care.

I can also help you form questions for your other providers, so you can maximize their expertise as part of your broader body-care plan.

Pricing

Your monetary investment will depend on the plan we create for you, where we meet and how often. Rates vary from $85 to $150 per session.

My services are rarely covered by insurance, though they are allowable expenses in many Health Savings Accounts.
